Knickerbocker Hotel History
The Knickerbocker Hotel was erected in 1939 for Mr George Gunther and his sister Ms Jennie Nicholas - a three story brick comer building in an architectural style combining functionalist and art deco elements (architect R Fitzgerald).
The site originally held Leadenhall Markets butcher shop and a newspaper shop - demolished to erect the Grand Hotel in 1890 (see pictures right) which was also demolished to erect the Knickerbocker in 1939
In 1948 the Knickerbocker was Bathurst's leading hotel. On 6 November, 1948 Prime Minister Ben Chifley presided over an historic Federal Cabinet Meeting in the lounge bar. This led to the army replacing striking coal miners and the unprecedented action of the Labour Government ordering the miners back to work.
